Recently a customer called my office and wanted to know why she received a fine from the DMV. I reviewed her account and told her she had requested to remove insurance on her 1999 Ford Taurus a few weeks prior. She acknowledged this request but didn’t understand why this resulted in a fine from the DMV. I asked her if she turned in her tags and she said “no” but that she had not driven the car.
You have to turn in your tags to the DMV before removing insurance from your vehicle otherwise the DMV will issue a fine regardless if you have driven the vehicle or not. There is no way for the DMV to verify you have not driven the vehicle other than optaining your tags.
